Since 1979 · three generations of Alnwick ironmongers

Geoffrey opened the first shop in 1979. His daughter Sally runs it today.

The Proudlock name in Alnwick hardware predates the current shop. Geoffrey grew up in the trade, watching his own father run an ironmonger\'s in the town. In 1979, at the age of 28, Geoffrey opened the first Proudlock\'s on his own account. By the early 2000s the business had grown to five stores across Northumberland and the range had broadened from pure hardware into homewares, furniture, and gifts.

Sally Proudlock joined the board of G.R. Proudlock Limited in 2009 and runs the flagship at 15 Market Street day to day. Three generations of the family on a hardware-store register. Forty-six years of trading on the same Northumberland market square.

FAQ · what we get asked

Six questions we hear at the counter, most days of the week.

Do you have the part I need in stock? I do not want to drive in from the coast for nothing.

The fastest answer is the phone. Ring the shop on 01665 602271 between 9 and 5, Monday to Saturday, with the part you are after and we will go and check it on the shelves before you set off. For the larger lines, the in-store catalogue page on this site shows what each floor stocks. If we have not got the item in, we can usually order it in within the week through the Home Hardware Direct trade route.

What is on which floor?

Ground floor is the working shop, hardware and ironmongery, plus the local trades: key cutting, knife sharpening, gas cannister refills and exchanges. First floor is kitchenware, cookware, gifts, candles, seeds, glassware, and the Chalk Clothing range. Top floor is furniture, beds, mirrors, and the Corona pine collection. The summer garden-furniture marquee sits on the rear of the building from spring through to the end of summer.

Do I commit to the design before any code is written?

No. The mocks in the proposal show what the rebuilt site will look like, and you sign off on the design before any production code is written. If you have brand assets, I will respect them. If you do not, you will get a coherent visual language out of the project and own it afterwards. We can also work together to get the vibe you want into the website, and I will make sure it is SEO optimised.

Can I get my keys cut, gas cannister refilled, or knife sharpened in the shop?

Yes, all three. House and padlock keys are cut at the trade counter on the ground floor. We handle Calor and Flogas cannister refills, exchanges, and new purchases on the ground floor too. Kitchen knives, chef knives, scissors, and blades go to the sharpening service the same day, usually within the hour while you shop the other floors.

Do you deliver the larger furniture across the UK?

Yes. The web shop launched in 2018 specifically so that the larger furniture, dining tables, sideboards, beds, the Top Floors range, and the Corona collection can be delivered nationwide. Phone the shop for a quote on delivery to your postcode and we will work out the lead time and the carrier.

Is the garden-furniture marquee open all year?

No, the marquee is a summer fixture only. It opens in spring once the weather settles and closes once the season ends. The indoor garden range, seeds, tools, and smaller outdoor lines, stays on the ground floor through the winter.
